How does your garden grow?

I’m both disappointed and very pleased with my garden. The back part, where the carrots, beets, onion, etc. were, sprouted a lot of sprouts very early, and then they just stopped growing. And then I found cat poo and there are paw prints from something digging. I’ve given up on anything growing there until I can fix my fence. I think I might dig everything back there up (rescue the few carrots that did grow), and then lay chicken wire down over it before I plant anything more. I’d like to try winter gardening and I’d probably need to do that next week, but we’ll see if I have time/money/energy to fix the fence first. Otherwise, I’ll just call that section of garden a bust for this year and plant some revegetation mix. It’s disappointing to lose so much seed and the energy it took to prepare that bed though.

Some of my potatos were looking ready to harvest, and after seeing Kyre’s I was really excited to see what mine looked like. I was disappointed to find nothing but tiny tiny potatoes, smaller than a marble. I only pulled one up, so I’m just going to water the heck out of the rest of them and hope for the best. They didn’t get covered nearly as high as they should have been, because I ran out of dirt and the dirt was getting so high it was falling off anyway.

broccoli

Some things are doing really well though. I harvested broccoli last weekend. We had sticky chicken with fresh broccoli and peas from the garden. It was really rewarding to eat food that I grew.

There's already more broccoli ready to harvest back there.

Corn and beans. The corn isn't growing as tall as fast as I'd hoped, so I have to stake all the beans. I haven't done that yet.

In other news, we’re off to beautiful Tofino and the west coast of the island for a few days with Kris’ dad and little brother. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been starting to feel a little queasy in the evenings though, so I really hope the actual nausea can hold off until after we get back. I’ll probably have lots of pictures when we get back. For those who have never been, it’s a beautiful place. It rains a lot though, or so I’ve heard. I don’t think it’s ever rained when we’ve gone, so hopefully our luck holds out this time too.

  • Wow! I want to eat out of your garden! Home grown broccoli is a favourite of mine. Yours looks so good! I also love the butterfly garden. How pretty!

Can’t wait to hear how the trip went. I hope the curvey road won’t make you more sick.

  • You’re garden is doing great! I’m so impressed with your broccoli, mine looks so sad compared to yours.
Carrots and beets are something you can grow in your garden right up until the first frost so if you re-plant that bed and lay chicken wire you will probably get a fair amount in September or October.
My potatoes are also still quite small even thought the plants started wilting. I’m definitely going to wait until August to try harvesting again. Potatoes love fertilizer so I’m going to pile some compost on them and see if that gives them a boost.
My corn sucks too! The beans are definitely bigger than my corn. I didn’t realize how bad mine was until I saw Kyrie’s.
Keep at it though, eating out of your own garden is so rewarding!

  • I think we are going to go to Tofino next year. We are planning to have an actual 2 week holiday on the island so we can visit family and go to the places I love. Walter’s brothers have a float house somewhere up north (in that bay where the baby orca got seperated from its pod) so we might go there too.

  • Oh that would be cool! Meredith had a blast. I bet Sam and Ant would love it. We missed Anthony when Meredith was having fun being a little mountain goat and climbing all over the rocks that were twice as tall as me.

Annie and Natalie, I love having a garden. I’m glad I’m not the only one having problems with corn and potatoes. I think I will fix up the back garden and try and cat proof it better and then plant some fall veggies.
